A PUBLIC LIVING ROOM

The new Alphabetti will become an arts venue that is open and accessible to everyone, in response to the cost of living crisis. With its permeable plan, it is a charged space that anticipates performance and play, a place for coming and going whilst also accommodating stillness and solitary onlooking. Its function is to welcome, releasing people from a world overfocused on the intensity of purpose. Comfort is found in its in-betweenness: a loose fit between public and private, between old and new, between inside and outside, where you can find yourself in the cultural and architectural orbit of the building without crossing a physical threshold.
