Chris Rook

Assistant Professor

Department: Computer and Information Sciences

EE Chris Rook Staffprofile 255After completing a PGCE I worked as a teacher for several years in Shropshire and London, teaching mainly science and maths, but also English, drama, fencing, sex education and adventure sports.

My main teaching interests are games programming, maths, games AI, scripting and various development topics. This has involved the creation of a large number of new modules and teaching methods. I have previously taught a wide a range of subjects including UML, databases, internet technologies, Java, theories of failure and game design. In addition to my teaching commitments I am coordinator for one of our franchise colleges in Malaysia.

In 2009, I was deeply honoured to be awarded a student-nominated Applauding and Promoting Teaching award for a “high standard of commitment, reliability and innovation”.

Building on my previous classroom experience, my favourite way of teaching is to work with small groups or brief one-to-one interactions in order to identify the concepts that individual students are finding problematic, then to try different methods of exploring the problem, suited to the student. The pleasure of seeing a light-bulb come on in a student’s mind is the most rewarding part of the job.
