is home to four museums, three art
galleries, two Roman forts and one archive. Together, these sites combine to
tell the stories that have shaped not only the North of England, but the rest
of the world.
Northumbria University and North East Museums have worked together informally for
over a decade. That relationship has sought to reinforce extensive links
between the two organisations and amplify the contributions each makes to
understanding the art, culture, heritage and science of the North East.
In 2023, Northumbria and North East Museums embarked
on a new partnership. Together, we will unite to tell new stories about the
North and find new ways of conserving and interpreting its heritage. We are
excited about the future of our dynamic North East, and believe art, culture
and heritage sit firmly at the heart of our region.
A new interdisciplinary research
working group is focusing on bidding and outputs around the partnership themes
of social care and wellbeing, digital collections management, history &
heritage, social mobility, and creative and cultural sector resilience
Colleagues from North East Museums deliver learning
and teaching activity into subject areas ranging from History and Conservation
of Fine Art, to Engineering and Law. The partnership with North East Museums opens up access
to archives, collections, and specialist museum staff, giving students and
academics a rich resource base that enhances learning and opens rich new
research opportunities. Our partnership includes placement
opportunities and student projects in North East Museum’s venues across Tyne and Wear, which
are mutually beneficial to both organisations and to student experience.
