Northumbria hosts Gender & Development anniversary event

19th June 2018

Northumbria University’s Centre for International Development recently co-hosted a workshop with the Development Studies Association’s Women and Development study group, celebrating the 25th anniversary of the (G&D), Oxfam GB’s flagship practitioner journal.

The event, entitled ‘‘Bringing our feminist values to development research, policy and practice’, took place at Northumbria’s London Campus and featured presentations by a range of inspiring feminist researchers, including early career scholars and development practitioners.

The highlight was a live panel debate featuring Professor Naila Kabeer, of London School of Economics; Professor Ruth Pearson, of the University of Leeds, Professor Shirin Rai, of the University of Warwick, and Dr Caroline Sweetman, editor of Gender and Development journal – all key activist thinkers in gender and development. The panellists reflected on the challenges and achievements they have encountered over 25 years of Gender and Development, both as a discipline and as a journal.

The panel was chaired by Dr Lata Naranayaswamy, of the University of Leeds.

Those unable to attend the event were still able to take part online, with the debate

The event was co-organised by the DSA’s Women and Development TV Group, chaired by Dr Lata Naranayaswamy, of the University of Leeds and Dr Katy Jenkins, Associate Professor in International Development at Northumbria University.
